Working as a loan officer, I have noticed quite a number of bankruptcies and the staggering number of medical collections on the credit of many Americans. Doesn’t this scream out for an overhaul of the health care system, not new bankruptcy laws? Hell, my fiancee has 13 medical collections, because she happened to get kidney stones while in college and uninsured.
It’s a slap in the face to Americans if Republicans say this is for anything other than appeasing huge campaign donors.

Oh, and things are going to get interesting. After all, far too much of our economy is based on freely available credit, and what’s going to happen when enough people decide to chop up their cards and refuse to sign up for more? (Me, that’s why the Czarina and I are doing our best to get everything paid off by the end of the year: we’d like to look toward 2006 without any worries about these damn sharks, and if they’re upset that I won’t sign up for any more 30-percent cards, tough shit.)

Exactly. When I had a fairly serious accident a few years ago…I had amazingly good insurance…and I still had over 50K in bills that weren’t covered. Fortunately, I had been a Broadcast.com employee when we were bought by Yahoo…so I didn’t have to sell my house to pay the bills…but if I had just been a 60K a year wage slave…there’s no way I could have ever paid the debt off.

It’s obscene. This law is obscene.

Yeah…I’m with you. After my cards got hacked…and someone bought a racehorse in Cyprus with the number, I told Tom that once the whole “stolen” thing was taken care of…we just need to pay off the cards. I need one for the business, so I can order from remote suppliers…but no more carrying balances anymore. I refuse, unilaterally refuse, to support this system as it stands.
